Information about Gregynog Hall

par Béatrice Desoudin - 24 juin 2013

Gregynog Hall

Famed for centuries for its hospitality An ancient house with a Victorian face. Situated far from any city yet at the heart of Welsh history, art and politics. Once a landed estate, now a university conference centre, the house is still at the heart of the local community.

History

Gregynog has existed for eight hundred years. By the sixteenth century it was the home of the Blayney family, local gentry who claimed descent from the early Welsh princes and whose courage and benevolence were praised by the court poets. Their coat of arms is the centrepiece of the fine oak carvings in what we now call the Blayney Room.

Conferences

When Gregynog was bequeathed to the University of Wales, we inherited not a simple conference centre but a national institution, which had been famous for its hospitality for at least four hundred years and had hosted conferences since the 1920s.

Accomodation

Gregynog Hall has accommodation available for up to 101 people (sharing) with 56 bedrooms, including 14 traditional en-suite, and a further 6 bedrooms in a cottage nearby. Our rooms are of varying sizes and styles, from grand historic rooms to single study bedrooms

Gardens & Walks

Gregynog Hall is surrounded by 750 acres of grounds containing many different landscapes including Grade 1 listed formal gardens. The Gardener’s Chronicle of 1912 described these as ‘highly artistic and in complete harmony with the natural surroundings’ CADW added ‘one of the most important parks and gardens in Powys, dating from at least 1500s.
